Final Waves and Epic Farewells

19 09 2010

My last two days in Byron Bay have been as good as I could have hoped for. For starters the swell has served up some of the tastiest waves I’ve had for months. The last week has been pumping.

Surfing, Unemployment and Planning

17 09 2010

Todays been rather eventful, exciting, tiring and sad in equal measure – and for a mixture of reasons.

I’ll get the surf update out of the way – mainly because my blog is chock a block full of my surf related ramblings and also because I’m sure my brother only reads the intros to my posts….so I’ll get the jealousy in there before he switches off!

Out Back, The Wreck

The above shot was taken this week at The Wreck – during my penultimate Aussie surf with my little brother. Here he and Jonesey sit out back in between sets while I frantically swim around trying to avoid hold downs and be in the right spot for their waves…fun times! But I took the time to get a calmer shot of them, framed by the exposed metal of the Wreck where we had so many good surfs.

Pat, The Wreck

This photo is one of the images I shot late last week at The Wreck in Byron (as blogged here). It’s actually one of the first shots of the session!
Pat dropped in on an early set, grabbed the rail and spent pretty much the whole wave deep In the barrel and heading straight towards me – meaning I got a sick sequence and a new profile pic for his Facebook page!
An awesome session, with awesome friends, in an awesome backdrop :)

Tattoo Time

23 06 2010

So after the incident involving my !face and my surfboard! I decided that the shipwreck at Byron needed to be remembered.

I’ve also been toying with ideas for an Australia related tattoo for a while…so incorporating the two seemed like a good plan.

Sunset Session at The Wreck

After over 2 weeks of being out of the water I’m finally back surfing. I warmed up in the small swell at the start of this week on my birthday, but nothing too major. Then today a lush swell hit, so I went in all guns blazing and loaded with the GoPro camera. It was international surfing day after all! 6 hours in the water, 3 different beaches and surf breaks and a big smile on my face! This image was shot at The Wreck (where I bust my face up!) just before sunset…big and hollow!

Surfboard + Face = OUCH

Ok so this installment of Photo of the Week is less places, more face…or at least what’s left of mine! This was shot 24 hours after I collided with my surfboard at The Wreck in Byron this week (which I blogged about HERE). As you can see I’m rather worse for wear – a broken nose, stitches and heaps of swelling. Looks worse than it feels though, which is kinda good! Stay safe in the surf!

The iPad Review…Delayed!

29 05 2010

Ok so I’ve had my iPad for over 24 hours now, and the plan was to bust out an initial review of it for you all – a quick overview of it and what not.

However as usual the surf has delayed my writing…
But this time not due to it being pumping (although it was)
Nope, this time it’s because surfing landed me in Byron A&E!

Empty Perfection, The Wreck – Byron Bay

After a morning coffee this week I noticed the swell lines were firing into Byron Bay, so I waxed up my board and got stuck in. As the tide turned it started hollowing out and people were tucking in left right and centre. As soon as I’d had my fill I grabbed the camera and started shooting – there were only about 3 people braving The Wreck – but they were on top form. This is one of the few empty waves which rolled through, it’s the best I’ve seen The Wreck since I arrived. STOKED.

The Byron Beach Guide

24 04 2010

So I’ve been in Byron for a while now – and I’m getting to know it pretty intimately, so I thought I’d share my knowledge and bosh out this beach guide for you.

Its mainly from a surfer perspective but it also breaks down the various beaches and sub beaches Byron has to offer. Read the rest of this entry »
