A Day of Didge

27 02 2010

So after a few days of Didge lessons with Che I decided to bite the bullet and get my hands dirty by making a Didge from scratch!

The first step is picking the length of wood, so off to the psychedelic Arts Factory Bust shed we went. I had a vision of what I wanted my didge to look and sound like; something really deep and traditional with curves and lots of character…I don’t ask for much!

Working in True Backpacker Style

26 02 2010

Up until today the last proper days work I did was back in Septmeber 2009!

I wont lie…I’ve been enjoying bumming around Oz slowly dwindling my savings and lazing around on the beach during the day and drinking away the nights….it’s a good life!

But on a chance conversation this morning I ended up actually doing some manual labour (yes actual man like, hands dirty manual labour) for Cockatoo Paul.

HOSTEL REVIEW: The Arts Factory

17 02 2010

Built in the 1970’s by a bunch of hippies the Arts Factory retains the laid back ethos of its founders. Unfortunately its also retained alot of the original decour and structure!

Offering a variety of accommodation types, from themed dorms through to couples retreats the price varies too. I opted to stay in a Teepee.

Sounds cool but it turned out to be nothing but a glorified tent! Beds were basic, storage was minimal. I also thought it was MASSIVELY overpriced at $34 per night – especially considering a proper bed in an air conned, properly clean Sydney hostel is rarely more than $30 per night!

However saying that this hostel oozes atmosphere and there are many activities on site; from yoga through to didge making (see my other blog) and bushtucker walks.

It comes complete with a decent sized – and clean – pool, relaxing hammocks and late night cafe. Also situated across the car park is the Buddah Bar – with its $2.50 schooner happy hour, and the Lounge Cinema – with its resonable priced screenings and sofa seating layout.

I spent many days and nights soaking up the ambience here, however I did it whilst staying at a campsite, which meant I got all the good bits but saved a hell of a lot of dollar!

Cleanliness – 3/5

Atmosphere – 4/5

Facilities – 4/5
